NHS weight-loss injections in Greater Manchester

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) is being introduced gradually for people at the greatest clinical risk. It is a weekly injection and must be provided alongside dietary, activity and behaviour-change support. Eligibility does not guarantee immediate access.

Current staged rolloutGreater Manchester identifies and invites eligible patients. Please do not contact the practice solely to request Mounjaro; the practice will contact you if you are identified for assessment.
Published rollout cohortsInitial cohort: BMI 40 or above plus at least four qualifying conditions.
2026/27 expansion: BMI 35–39.9 plus at least four qualifying conditions, introduced in stages as services become available.

The five qualifying health conditions

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Abnormal blood fats (dyslipidaemia)
Adjusted BMI thresholds: the BMI threshold is 2.5 units lower for people from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds. All eligibility and diagnoses must be confirmed clinically.

Important safety information

Only obtain weight-loss medicines following an assessment by a qualified prescriber and from a registered pharmacy. Do not buy injections from social media, beauty salons or unregulated websites. Tell the practice if you use a privately prescribed weight-loss medicine because it can affect other treatment and planned surgery.

Seek urgent medical advice for severe, persistent abdominal pain, particularly if it spreads to the back or comes with nausea or vomiting, as this may indicate pancreatitis.

Check your BMI and health

BMI is one tool used to assess weight-related health risk, but it does not give the full picture. Your waist measurement, medical conditions, medicines and individual circumstances also matter.

Worried about eating or body image?

Weight-loss programmes may not be appropriate if you have an eating disorder or feel distressed about eating, weight or body image. Please contact the practice for clinical help. Beat supports anyone affected by an eating disorder; you do not need a diagnosis.

Beat’s England helpline is currently open Monday to Friday, 3pm–8pm. For urgent medical help, use NHS 111; call 999 in a life-threatening emergency.
