Free home STI tests
If you have no symptoms, home testing may be suitable. The tests offered depend on your postcode and eligibility.
- Chlamydia and gonorrhoea tests The Northern directs Salford residents to SH:24 for free home sampling kits.
- HIV and syphilis testing options Check eligibility for HIV self-testing or laboratory testing. Syphilis testing depends on local availability.
- Testing through The Northern Use the service’s Personal Health Record to explore appointments and home-testing options.
Have symptoms or are you under 16? Contact a sexual-health clinic for advice. Do not wait for a home test if you need urgent care.
Emergency contraception
After unprotected sex or contraceptive failure, get advice as soon as possible. Some options can be used up to five days afterwards.
A copper coil is the most effective emergency contraception and can also provide ongoing protection against pregnancy.
Contact a community pharmacy, the practice or The Northern for same-day advice. Do not wait for a routine appointment.
Possible exposure to HIV
PEP must be started within 72 hours of a possible exposure to HIV. Seek help immediately — the sooner, the better.
Contact The Northern urgently. If the clinic is closed, go to A&E for assessment rather than waiting until it reopens.
After rape or sexual assault
Saint Mary’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre offers specialist care and support. You can ask for help without making a report to the police.

Pregnancy advice and options
If you are pregnant and unsure what to do, confidential advice is available. You can contact an NHS-funded abortion provider directly without a GP referral.
